What is LRACCC?... Yesterday... Today

by: Donald G. Kirkorian, Executive Director

Yesterday...

During March of 1970 community college resources personnel faced a crisis when a proposal was made to eliminate the credential requirements for librarians. Individuals representing professional state organizations that included library and media personnel in their membership met with the representatives from the California Community College Chancellor's Office and were successful in retaining the credential.

This incident brought into focus a need for an organization that could offer representation and leadership to community college learning resources personnel.  This organization would not be the usual membership organization, but an organization made up of representation from the different professional membership organizations that contain groups of learning resources personnel.

The founders of LRACCC were Shirley Bosen, Warren B. Hicks, Richard Ingalls, Roger McFarland, and Win Smith.  During 1973 the LRACCC constitution was written and shortly thereafter the organization began functioning.

Today...

Today LRACCC continues its role as a professional organization providing leadership and coordination for those organizations, colleges, and those learning resources personnel concerned with the development of instructional resources in the 109 California Community Colleges.  The Board of LRACCC is composed of one representative from each member organization, one member from each of five geographical regions, an ex-officio member from the Chancellor’s Office, the Editor of INTERCOM, and the Executive Director.

The Board approved a plan in 1998 to involve corporate partners in the association.

LRACCC is an affiliate of the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA).

Some of the services LRACCC provides for the California Community Colleges:

A. Maintains an ongoing link to the Chancellor's Office, and other organizations.
As an ex-officio member of LRACCC, the Coordinator, Library Learning Resources Program Planning & Development, helps to maintain communications with Sacramento and the legislative process.   For many years, LRACCC has used a legislative advocate and has appointed LRACCC representatives to serve on the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) Finance and Legislative Commissions.  During 1997, LRACCC joined with the Council of Chief Librarians (CCL) to work on projects of mutual interest

B. Organizes and represents workshops and conferences.
Topics of vital concern to community colleges and learning resources personnel have been presented over the years both in Northern and Southern California.

C. Publishes and markets important reference works and an informational periodical.
A statewide directory of learning resources personnel in all California community colleges is printed for member colleges.  A newsletter, INTERCOM, is published three times a year.  In addition, publications are currently marketed nationally. These publications are listed on our website at www.lraccc.org.

D. Develops and recommends guidelines and works to improve standards.
Publications focus on guidelines for facilities, materials, and personnel related to instructional resources.

Further questions regarding the organization should be directed to the Executive Director.
